Self-Clinching Fasteners

Self-clinching (captive) fasteners provide an effective and economical way to attach components to one another without the need for welding. Self clinching fasteners are positioned to the accuracy of the part’s installation hole location and are designed to be pressed into these holes that have been previously punched, drilled or machined into a part.  Subsequently, this makes them an integral part of the manufactured assembly.

Contact us for more information regarding our quality self clinching captive fasteners or call us at 800-783-0910, we would be happy to assist you with any questions that you may have. Monroe-JHP Fasteners is an industry leading distributor of self clinching fasteners. If you are in the market for a captive fastener of any type, we have (or can get) what you need.

Self Clinching Fastener Options

At Monroe JHP Fasteners we provide self clinching captive fasteners in numerous sizes and variations. We can help evaluate your application and provide you with the correct clinch fastener for your project needs. Our standard captive fastener options include the following:

Self Clinching Nuts

When selecting self clinching nuts for your application, several factors should be considered. Among these are the ductility and thickness of the metal into which they will be installed, and the function the nut is expected to perform.

Self Clinching Studs

A self clinching stud is designed to become a permanently installed male thread of the part or component into which it’s installed. They are available in a range of sizes styles and materials including aluminum, steel, and stainless steel to meet the specific needs of your application.

Self Clinching Standoffs

These fasteners can provide protection for fragile circuitry and electrical connectors on printed circuit boards (PCBs) and other electrical assemblies. Self clinching standoffs provide a stable platform on which to mount these and other hardware that you wish to elevate from the parent material of the assembly.

Self Clinching Fasteners for PC Boards

These fasteners are designed to connect one PC board to another board, metal chassis, or other component. They are available in stainless steel, carbon steel, brass or phosphor bronze and some of them are also solderable.

Self Clinching Panel Fasteners

This industrial fastener provides a permanent attachment of a screw assembly to a sheet metal panel, which may then be attached and removed via use of the captive fastener contained in the assembly.

Self Clinching Pins

These captive fasteners Operate in the same way as the self clinching studs but provide a permanently installed male pin of a certain diameter. One type of self clinching pin is often used as a guide pin when aligning other components for assembly.

How do Self Clinching Fasteners Work?

A self clinching fastener, or “captive fastener” is a threaded device, that when inserted, transfers the host material surrounding the mounting hole, into a unique annular recess in the shank of the fastener preventing pushout. Once inserted, there is also a serrated clinch profile that prevents the fastener from rotating within the host material. After the installation process of the self clinching fastener has been completed, the clinch fastener becomes a near permanent part of the base material.

Utilizing Self Clinching Fasteners

For most applications, self clinching fasteners do not take up as much space as anchor or cage nuts. They also require far fewer assembly operations, which saves time and makes them easier to use. Clinch fasteners are also used when an existing component must be easily replaced, or where hardware accessibility is at a premium.

Captive Fastener Key Beneficial Qualities

Self clinching fasteners provide numerous advantages over standard fasteners. These specialized devices allow for simplified installations and quick project turnaround times. Some of the main benefits related to self clinching fasteners, include:

  • Provides high pushout and torque-out resistance.
  • Does not require special hole preparation, such as chamfering and deburring.
  • No swaged rim protrusion.
  • Does not require retapping after application.
  • Low installed costs.
  • Provides strong threads or attachment in metal as thin as 0.20 mm / .008″.
  • May be installed using any parallel acting squeezing force.

Self Clinching Fastener Material Options

Depending on your specific application, one material may be more beneficial than another. Our captive fastener material options include the following:

  • Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Aluminum
  • Brass
  • Bronze

Clinch Fastener Installation Process

Self clinching fasteners do not require special machinery for installation, although fastener insertion machines that are designed specifically for this purpose make the job quicker and easier. The chosen fastener for the job is solely dependent on the thickness and ductility of the sheet metal used, and the function of the fastener. We’ll help you choose the best self clinching nuts, self clinching standoffs, or other self clinching fasteners for your specific application. When you work with JHP, you can be sure you’re getting the right product.

Captive Fastener vs. Self Clinching Fasteners

Monroe JHP has been selling Captive Fastener’s self clinching nuts and other self clinching fasteners since 1985. In the 25-plus years that we’ve carried these products, they’ve proven time and again to be every bit as good as (if not better than) the similar, but more well-known brands of nuts and fasteners.

In dimension, geometry, and durability, Captive Fastener’s products are perfect nuts, studs, etc. In terms of quality and value, Captive’s self clinching standoffs, nuts, and other industrial fasteners are the superior choice. Make the switch to Captive Fastener today and see why we’ve remained loyal to their brand for more than a quarter-century.
